2026 NEWS - SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN

autism spectrum disorder
As of April 2026, the number of registered autistic individuals in Malaysia has risen to almost 89,000, according to Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad. This reflects a significant increase in autistic registrations, with nearly 60,000 children diagnosed as special needs including autistic, attention deficit disorder, hyperactivity disorder, non verbal communication, add and adhd and registered as of early 2025, a figure that continues to rise.

The number of autistic individuals registered with the Department of Social Welfare (JKM) has nearly quadrupled since 2021, rising from roughly 23,000 to nearly 89,000 in 2026.

The increase is driven by improved awareness, better early detection, and more parents seeking diagnosis, rather than just an increase in cases.

The rise in numbers reflects a positive trend in better identification and a growing need for support, education, and services for the neurodivergent community
